LDS Church Hides Historical Facts

LDS church leaders have admitted that they hide certain historical facts from their members that would not be faith promoting.

Here is a excerpt from an interview on a PBS special about mormonism where mormon church apostle admits in an interview that they don’t put things in historical books that might make their faith look bad:

The interviewer asks “Is there a conflict between a faith-promoting work of scholarship and factual scholarship? Is there a conflict at all?”

And Boyd Kay Packer responds “Some things that are true aren’t very useful. And there are those in the past who have looked at the leaders of the Church, for instance, and found out that they’re human and want to tell everything. There are steps and missteps that don’t help anything. Some think that to be totally honest they have to tell everything. They don’t.

Want to know what things they’ve hidden? Take for instance the fact that Joseph Smith is recorded in LDS Church history as becoming a Freemason about a month before he invented the temple ceremony, and much of the mormon temple ceremonies are exact duplicates of things that were originally found in Freemasonry, or that Joseph Smith is a documented liar based on the mormon’s own church history, or the fact that the the mormon’s Book of Abraham has been exposed as a “fraud” by Egyptologists, or the fact that they’ve made hundreds of changes, including theological changes, in their Book of Mormon, even though Joseph Smith said it was the most “correct book on earth.”

On top of that, their Book of Mormon, the book that they tell people to pray about to find out if the church is true, really doesn’t hold any uniquely mormon doctrines. The real mormon doctrines are in their book of Doctrine & Covenants, which they don’t tell people to pray about before joining, or in the many other writings of their prophets, such as the Journal of Discourses where you can find that Brigham Young taught that Adam was God, or that there are some sins Christ’s atonement wasn’t enough to cover, such interracial marriages which he considered a terrible sin.

Here is a quote directly from Brigham Young talking about the African race which he considered to be the descendants of Cain:

“Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so. The nations of the earth have transgressed every law that God has given, they have changed the ordinances and broken every covenant made with the fathers, and they are like a hungry man that dreameth that he eateth, and he awaketh and behold he is empty.”

– Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, v. 10, p. 110

You can find the Journal of Discourses, where this quote comes from, still referenced as scripture, in the LDS church’s official university resources: http://scriptures.byu.edu/

One place that the LDS church may get the idea that it’s OK to hide things from it’s memebers is from their founder of mormonism himself. Joseph Smith not only hid his adulterous polygamy, but also lied about it and it’s recorded in the histories of the LDS church. If you want to know more of about what the LDS church not only hides, but lies about, check out this video:

Not only do they hide historical facts, but now in this modern day they also hide things what the charitable donations (tithing) from their members is being used for. Unlike many other churches who make their finances public, the LDS hides their finances. Recently a whistle blower from inside the LDS church alleges that the mormon General Authorities lied about how their funds were being used to members of the church.

  1. Sad but true. The more you learn about the church, it’s just sad. So many people are taught to ignore the anti-mormon material. They are taught it’s of the devil. Yet the truth isn’t what is evil. What is actually evil is covering up the truth. The church claims to be true. Yet doesn’t tell the entire truth. How can they not feel bad about that?
